Microsoft 365 licensing in plain words
The plan you buy decides what you can switch on. This is the short version, current as of September 2026.

Business plans, up to 300 users
Business Basic, Standard and Premium suit small and mid sized teams. Premium adds Entra ID Plan 1, Intune and Defender for Business, the floor we set before AI rollout.

E3 and E5 for enterprises
E3 covers the apps, Entra ID Plan 1 and core compliance. E5 adds Entra ID Plan 2, Defender and the full Purview stack. Copilot is a paid add on to both, priced per user.

E7, the Frontier Suite
Generally available since 1 May 2026, E7 is E5 plus Copilot, the Entra Suite and Agent 365 in one license. It is the only plan with agent governance built in.

Copilot and Copilot Chat
Web grounded Copilot Chat comes free with an eligible plan. Chat grounded in your own work data needs a Copilot license, or E7. We model the cost per role first.
